  • Weight Gain and A Shift in Center of Gravity: Pregnancy weight places extra pressure on the feet, and the shift in the center of gravity alters the posture and gait. This strains the feet and lower legs.
  • Hormonal Changes: During pregnancy, the body produces a hormone called relaxin, which helps to loosen the ligaments and joints in the pelvis to prepare for childbirth. However, relaxin also affects other joints in the body, including those in the feet. This can lead to instability and a higher risk of rolling the feet.
  • Swelling: Many pregnant women experience swelling in their feet and ankles, especially during the third trimester. This swelling, known as edema, is due to increased blood volume and fluid retention. Edema can cause discomfort and exacerbate foot pain.

Managing Foot Pain During Pregnancy

  • Elevate your feet: Try to prop up your feet on a pillow or footrest when sitting or lying down. Elevating your feet helps improve circulation and reduce fluid buildup in the lower extremities.
  • Stay hydrated: Drinking plenty of water helps reduce swelling by flushing out excess sodium and fluids from the body. Aim for at least 8-10 glasses of water per day.
  • Exercise regularly: Engage in low-impact exercises. Regular exercise helps improve circulation, maintain a healthy weight, and strengthen the muscles supporting your feet and legs. Always consult with your healthcare provider before starting any new exercise regimen.
